The Duchy Residents Association exists to preserve and protect the interests of the informal area known as the Duchy Estate.
The Duchy, or “Duchy Estate”, is synonymous with a certain tradition of Harrogate, featuring properties with interesting architecture and large gardens situated within a spacious and, sometimes, quiet residential area.
The problem for the Duchy is that, like many similar areas, its very tradition (which makes people want to live in the area) is under threat from all sorts of development and developers, as pressure on space and demand for fashionable areas increase.
Officially, the Duchy is protected through Conservation Area status. In reality, this status helps the cause of preservation but by no means halts the process of development.
The Association is therefore a defence mechanism for residents of the Duchy. Most people would probably wish that there was no need for the Association at all. Unfortunately, this need is likely to increase in future years.
